Kansas City Trip

Mom, Gram, Abi and I drove to Kansas City, MO on Tuesday. KC has a high Irish population, so there are several Irish shops around the city that we enjoy going to.

Well, let's rewind to Monday first. We spent all day doing laundry, putting things away, catching up on the mail, and sorting through a lot of emails.

Abi decided to make Haitian for supper that night. Since we are doing Haiti for the International Night at church, we decided it would be a good time to practice making pates.

Scooping the hotdog filling onto the dough

Yum!

The filling is spicy hotdogs, tomato paste, and maggi.

We were so afraid that our amaryllis was going to bloom while we were gone at YBC.

Thankfully, it didn't bloom while we were gone, but a couple days after we got home, it blossomed!

Dad and the boys have been working on a map of Haiti for our program.

It's turning out really nice! These pictures are a little old, so it's changed quite a bit.

Kansas City Trip
Back to our trip on Tuesday... We left about 7:30 am. It takes us about 3 hours to get there, so it's a nice jaunt. Abi and I thought we should get a selfie of ourselves , but it didn't turn out very well... :)

A once in a lifetime sunrise.

We stopped at Sheehan's Imports first, then drove over to Browne's restaurant and store for lunch.

Mm...Mm! Bewley's Irish tea is the best tea ever! Don't let anyone tell you that Barry's Irish tea is better, 'cause it's not. Hands down.

Ordering our food

Browne's has the best Irish potato soup that I've ever had. It's really thick and creamy with soft chunks of potatoes laced throughout, then rounded off with a nice heap of cheese on top. My mouth is watering...

Gram was smart enough to bring her camera in to get pictures of us (These pictures at the restaurant are hers. Thanks, Gram!). Too bad I haven't learned yet... *sigh*

Enjoying a cup o' tea

Ireland sweatshirts

I tried on an Irish wool hat.

This place is packed with stuff! Tables, chairs, yummy stuff, souvenirs, to name a few.

Preserves

As we were driving home, Mom spotted a billboard that said something like, "Not your typical Irish store." So, of course we had to stop!
We drove for quite some time before we reached the little town of Weston, MO. We had no clue what the store was called, so we just drove slowly down main street while Abi and I scanned both sides of the road.

Once we found it, we all piled out to go experience this nontypical Irish shop. I wouldn't say it was any different than others that I've been to, but it was a pretty nice place.

Weston was a really quaint little town. The streets reminded us so much of Ireland's streets! We were wondering if it was an Irish settlement because of the Irish sounding names that we kept seeing over shops.

Their street signs were like Ireland's too! We were all glad that we stopped. It was a fun detour!

Weston must be a fairly rich community. There were so many mansions! Yes, you heard right, mansions. We spent most of our drive to and from Weston ooing and ahing over how beautiful they all were. I'm sure the Missourians would be pitying these poor Iowans who are impressed by their mansions. :)

When we stopped for gas, there happened to be an Arby's conveniently near. Gram, Abi and I were very hungry, so we each got those yummy roast beef sandwiches that Arby's is famous for.

Curly fries

Decaf Bewley's means that we can have a cup o' Irish tea anytime of the day or night!

Mom got Abi and I this backpack as a gift for us at that shop in Weston for our trip to Ireland in April. It is really nice quality! Strong, durable canvas with lots of pockets and small enough to fit under an airplane seat. Thanks, Mom! :)
