2013 5th Annual Gavin/Grice/Gram Camping Trip

Welcome to our 5th annual camping trip to Cold Springs State Park! We, Gavins, Grices, and just lately Gram has joined us, go camping every September sometime after Labor Day. It's a vacation filled with fun, adventure, and the unexpected!

This year we had planned to go directly after the Tent Meetings, but had to postpone it till the next week, due to the weather being forecasted to soar to the upper 90s. We like to go camping in chilly weather. It makes the campfire much more pleasant when you actually need the heat.

Enjoy the photo tour of our adventure filled vacation! :)

Our van load arrived around 9:30 am Monday for set up.

It was cloudy and slightly chilly.

We brought all the wood we had, but still ran out later.
*Thank you, Martins, for sharing wood with us!*

This year, we had a "girl's" tent. Since there was going to be five of us, we got to have the big tent. :)

Ben and KK shared a tent.

Here comes Josh with an air mattress. Yes, we camped in luxury this year...

Now to fit the air mattress in Mom's small tent.

In honor of Gramps, Gram, Abi, and I contributed toaster strudels to our trip. Abi is toasting one over the fire here.

The boys got themselves sling shots and had a lot of fun shooting acorn and hickory nuts all over the place.

Ben and KK's tent

Cheers! Aunt Carol is finally here!

T.J. got a lantern and a hook-up thingy for it to hang from a tree. It took three boys to put it up. :)

When T.J. was looking for a place to hang the lantern, he saw a light pole, and exclaimed, "Oh, I can hang it from the light pole!" He said as soon as the words left his mouth, he realized that you won't need a lantern if you hang it from a light pole. :)

Me thinks that Josh is too big for the kiddy chair that has a weight limit of somewhere around 80#...

Someone spotted two doe down by the horseshoe rings. The little people took these pictures.

Aunt Carol's suite
She had a full size air mattress that filled up her entire tent, with just a little room on the sides to spare. We teased her that she can just roll into bed and back out again.

The girls' dorm

The fire pit at our campsite was different this year. It was bigger and didn't have a grate. In this picture, they're trying to borrow a grate from another campsite.

I found the little people in the pavilion playing marbles.

Surprise! We had left supper uncovered on the picnic table for a while and a bee found its way in. Good thing Abi discovered it. :)

Heating supper up

Sam, playing in T.J.'s tent.

The boys finally got a regular round fire pit from one of the other campsites. It worked a lot better!

Poor Mom was cold.

Hooray! The camper has arrived!
*Thank you, Ray and Tina for loaning it to Gram!*

The boys had a time of it getting the thing leveled so that we could put the slide out.

Gram, eating her biscuits and stew.

Abi, dishing up.

Hope was allowed to come and stay two nights with us. She had a blast, but went home very, very tired!

The ultimate comfort food on a chilly, cloudy day... Vegetable beef stew with homemade buttery biscuits, warmed over a campfire in a cast iron pot...

Ben and KK stayed Sunday night by themselves. For a "midnight snack" they went down to the pond and caught a couple bullfrogs and had roasted frog legs and hickory nuts. The only thing they were lacking was a pan, so Ben used his square. Hey, when you're ruffin' it, you'll do some mighty funny things!

Abi spent over two days cracking hickory nuts. I don't know how many times someone kicked that bowl and mixed the shells up with the meat. Poor Abi would have to sort them all out again.

Ah...

Ryan and Kels stopped by for supper on their way back home from Holdrege.

"Hey, look it me!"

Oh, jusht squeesh 'er!

Kater's first finger prints on Mom's reading glasses! So cute!

The best part of the evening, sitting around a roaring fire, chatting.

The lantern

No, we didn't all come down with the stomach flu. The light pole makes pictures a very pukey green.

The little guys found out that roasted Cheetos are yummy!

Martins surprised us with a quick visit that first night. We had a nice time chatting around the fire while the children played.

The four little people, Brie, Grace, Sam and Hope played hide and seek tag. Hope and Brie are "it" here. They were counting very loud and weren't in sink with each other at all! It was cute.

Check back later for the rest of our trip! I'll be posting each day separately, as there's a lot of pictures! :)
