Cass County Museum Field Trip

Mom had planned a family homeschool field trip on Nov. 19 to the Cass County Museum. Since we were going to be such a large group, she called Lila and arranged to have a private tour.

I could have spent  hours in that place! Nate, they've done a lot of changes since we were there 3 or 4 years ago. It looks really nice!

Mom, KK and I went early to get the percolators of water going for hot chocolate. Abi and Sam stayed home since they were both sick with a cold.
KK was giving us a running commentary from some old newspapers that he'd found. :)

Mom :)

Abi made peanut butter chocolate chip and oatmeal chocolate chip cookies for us.

After he had exhausted the reading material, he proceeded to make newspaper wads and throw them at Mom and me. Bad little boy!

Waiting for everyone to get there...

This model of an eight sided house really intrigued everyone. Supposedly, it's still standing, but in bad shape. Lila gave us some general directions to it, but she wasn't sure how accurate they were. Mom, Ben and I are determined to find the elusive eight sided house.

This whole room was filled with model buildings that a local man spent years building. All of the models are copied from real places in Cass and surrounding counties.

A thriving model farm.

Fresh pork anyone?

This was my favorite model. I love old houses!

This was the old bank vault, stuffed to the ceiling with old records.

"Irish Spinning Wheel"

This guy was kinda creepy...

Daddy was in his element!

The drum pictured here had an interesting history. It was used in the Civil War. I'm not sure what happened to it in the years between the war and the museum getting it. When the museum got it, the leather cover had shrunk almost beyond repair. They took it to different antique places to have it restored, but no one would even touch it. Finally, they asked the taxidermist that was cleaning all their furs and stuffed animals if he could do anything. Well, he said he'd try, so he spent quite awhile rubbing oil and water into the cover until it was able to be stretched across the drum. He did a wonderful job!

Reading old criminal records.

These records weighed prob'ly close to 35 or 40 pounds!

The mystery dance hall... I want to explore this building so bad!

Back at church for cookies and hot chocolate.

I actually got Josh to pose nicely! Usually, he's making an ugly face or else he moves and makes a blurry picture. :)

Ruthanna was really cute in this little sweater. :)

Rhoda was running up and down the top of the table... Notice the remnants of hot chocolate on her face?
